The Joseon Astronomical Golden Age: Sovereignty Written in the Stars

1. Gwancheon Su-si (觀天授時): Astronomy as Moral Governance

In classical East Asian cosmology, heaven bestowed the Mandate of Heaven upon the righteous ruler. If a monarch failed to accurately predict solar and lunar eclipses, or miscalculated seasonal planting dates, cosmic harmony was disrupted.

Under King Sejong (r. 1418–1450), the Royal Astronomical Bureau (*Gwansanggam*) determined the exact latitude and longitude of Seoul (Hanseong), compiling the Chiljeongsan (Calculation of the Motions of the Seven Celestial Bodies) in 1444. This established Korea's astronomical autonomy, enabling farmers across the peninsula to receive exact solar-term calibrations.

2. Cheonsang Yeolcha Bun-yajido (1395): The Stone Planisphere

Immediately following the founding of the Joseon Dynasty, King Taejo was presented with a rubbing of a lost 7th-century Goguryeo star map. In 1395, royal astronomer Yu Bang-taek carved 1,467 stars and 283 constellations into a black stele of polished marble.

Designated National Treasure No. 228, it is the second oldest stone-carved planisphere in the world. It depicts the celestial equator, ecliptic, Milky Way (*Eun-ha-su*), and concentric declination rings with remarkable mathematical precision.

The Public Science of the Angbu-ilgu (Concave Hemispherical Sundial)

Invented in 1434 by master engineers Jang Yeong-sil and Yi Cheon, the Angbu-ilgu (“kettle-shaped sun dial”) was placed on public pedestals along Jongno Boulevard in Hanseong. Unlike flat Western sundials that suffer distortion at steep angles, the hemispherical bronze basin eliminated projective distortion. Its gnomon points directly toward the North Star, casting a shadow across 13 seasonal declination lines and vertical hour lines. To allow commoners and illiterate citizens to read the time, each of the twelve double-hours was accompanied by an engraved animal of the Zodiac (*Sibijisin*).
