The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires that public platforms and web services ensure equal access for individuals with disabilities. At AndongKim.org, we view accessibility not merely as a legal mandate, but as a foundational scholarly and cultural responsibility. Historical heritage belongs to everyone.
We design, develop, and test our web application in alignment with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA, established by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), as well as Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act.
How AndongKim.org Implements ADA Compliance
We provide 4 user-selectable visual themes: Paper White (high-contrast light), Joseon Hanji (warm parchment reducing glare and eye strain for photophobia/migraines), Editorial Slate (muted low-contrast dark), and Midnight Ink (true black OLED dark). All themes exceed WCAG 2.1 AA 4.5:1 contrast standards.
Readers can dynamically adjust font sizes from 16px to 25px, switch line height from compact (1.6) to spacious (2.0), and adjust column width (60ch–85ch) to optimize reading comfort for low-vision readers, dyslexia, and cognitive tracking needs.
All website functions—including primary navigation, global search modal, reading settings dialog, article links, and intake forms—are 100% operable via keyboard (Tab, Shift+Tab, Enter, Space, Escape, and arrow keys) with prominent visible focus indicators and no keyboard traps.
Content is structured with native HTML5 landmarks (<header>, <nav>, <main>, <article>, <footer>) and accurate sequential heading hierarchies (H1 to H6), enabling screen reader users (NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver, TalkBack) to navigate efficiently.
All archival images, Jokbo genealogical tree diagrams, maps, and photographic records include descriptive alternative text (alt attributes) and textual captions that convey their historical meaning to non-visual users.
Our responsive layout supports browser zooming up to 400% without loss of content or horizontal scroll barriers. Interactive touch targets on mobile and touch devices maintain generous tap areas (minimum 44x44 pixels) to accommodate motor challenges.
