The Structural Science of the Panokseon and Geobukseon
In sixteenth-century East Asian naval warfare, the opposing Japanese naval strategy relied on sharp V-shaped hulls (*Sekibune*) designed for speed and closing rapidly to engage in hand-to-hand boarding swordsmanship. Joseon naval architects rendered this tactic completely futile by developing the Panokseon (板屋船 / Board-Roofed Ship) in 1555.
1. Dense Red Pine and Wooden Tree Nails (*Namu-mot*)
While Japanese warships utilized lightweight cedar and fir joined with iron nails that rusted in salt water, Joseon shipwrights constructed hulls from dense Korean red pine (*Sonamu*). Hull planks were fastened together using dry wooden oak pegs (*Namu-mot*). When exposed to seawater, these wooden pegs absorbed moisture and swelled, locking the thick timber joints into an impermeable, vibration-absorbent bond capable of withstanding the heavy recoil of bronze siege cannons.
2. The Four Heavenly Cannons and *Daejanggun-jeon* Ballistics
Rather than firing light lead balls, Joseon naval doctrine centered on the Four Heavenly Cannons (*Sa-cheon-ja Chongtong*): Cheon (Heaven), Ji (Earth), Hyeon (Black), and Hwang (Yellow). The largest Cheon-ja cannon fired the Daejanggun-jeon (大將軍箭)—a 30-kilogram solid wooden missile fitted with an armor-piercing iron head and iron steering fins. Fired across ranges exceeding 800 meters, these projectiles punched clean holes through enemy hull timber beneath the waterline.
3. General Kim Bang-gyeong and Goryeo Maritime Amphibious Warfare
Centuries before the Imjin War, the maritime tradition of the clan was forged by General Kim Bang-gyeong (1212–1300), Supreme Commander of Goryeo armed forces. In 1271 and 1273, Kim Bang-gyeong directed the joint naval fleet operations across the treacherous tidal currents of the southern archipelago, executing daring amphibious landings on Jindo and Jeju to pacify the Sambyeolcho rebellion and secure Korea's maritime frontiers.
