When the Joseon dynasty fell to Japanese imperial aggression in 1910, the leaders and descendants of the Andong Kim Clan did not acquiesce. Instead, they transformed centuries of Neo-Confucian moral resolve into relentless anti-colonial resistance. From Baekbeom Kim Gu, who guided the Provisional Government in Shanghai and Chongqing, to General Kim Jwa-jin, who commanded the legendary victory of Cheongsanri in Manchuria, clan patriots sacrificed noble wealth, endured decades in prison, and laid their lives on the altar of modern Korean democracy and liberation.

From Neo-Confucian Righteousness (*Ui*) to Modern Republicanism

1. The Righteous Army Tradition (*Uibyeong*)

The Korean independence movement was not born in a vacuum; it represented the culmination of centuries of Neo-Confucian moral training in *Ui* (義 / Moral Righteousness). When dynastic sovereign order collapsed, the moral imperative shifted to the people. In Andong and across the provinces, scholar-officials who had once studied the classics in rural academies (*Seowon*) took up modern rifles to form the Righteous Armies (*Uibyeong*).

Patriots such as General Kim Jwa-jin recognized that moral indignation alone could not withstand modern imperial armies. In 1907, at the age of eighteen, he emancipated all fifty domestic slave households on his estate, burned mortgage registries, and used his ancestral wealth to fund modern schools and military training programs.

2. Baekbeom Kim Gu and the Vision of Cultural Sovereignty

While military leaders engaged imperial forces in Manchuria, Baekbeom Kim Gu anchored the civil and diplomatic soul of the Korean nation in Shanghai and Chongqing. Rejecting imperialism and military dictatorship, Kim Gu formulated a profound political philosophy centered on universal humanitarianism and the transformative power of culture.

In his legendary testament My Wish (나의 소원), penned upon the liberation of Korea in 1947, Kim Gu declared: “I do not want our nation to be the wealthiest or the most militarily aggressive in the world, for the power of arms brings sorrow to oneself and others. The only thing I desire without bound is the power of a high culture, for culture makes ourselves happy and brings happiness to all mankind.”

The Living Heritage of Andong's Patriots

With over 380 officially decorated independence fighters, the city of Andong stands as the premier cradle of anti-colonial resistance in Korea. The sacrifice of its lineage families—who willingly surrendered their estates to establish military academies in the harsh winters of Manchuria—remains an enduring moral foundation for the Republic of Korea.
